The Royal Mint – New Visitor Centre

We re-established the professional team, initiated a new concept design, secured planning permission and determined the procurement strategy to deliver an £8m world class Visitor Centre and Brand Experience for the Royal Mint, to showcase their 1100 year heritage and become a premier Welsh attraction.

The Royal Mint were seeking a new visitor centre and ‘brand experience’ to support the marketing effort for their commemorative coin products, as well as showcase their 1100 year old cultural heritage. Whilst they had secured partial funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, the advisers had recommended the concept was reassessed to ensure a balanced budget between the ‘signature’ building design and the historic exhibition fit out.

With the budget capped and aspects of the ‘brand experience’ not included, there was a need to challenge the basic assumptions in terms of visitor nos, the building design in terms of size, shape and utilization; the exhibition design to ensure compatibility with the building; and the factory tour to make sure daily operations were not impacted.

We conducted a due diligence review and determined the scheme as presented was not viable and recommended it should be re-designed. We therefore initiated the partial re-appointed of the professional team, engaged other specialists, led internal stakeholders and designers in the development of a Client Brief and new Concept Design, and pre-qualified contractors in advance of their being invited to tender for the works.

With the completion of a new concept design, planning permission being obtained, an award of the advance enabling works contract, the competitive appointment of a new exhibition designer, and tenders being invited for the main construction works, the project is on schedule to meet the milestone opening date of Spring 2016.
